1 Litre of Tears ("Ichi Rittoru no Namida") is based on the true story of Kitou Aya (1962-1988), a Japanese girl who battled a rare disease till it took her life at the age of 25. A bestselling book was released which was based on her personal diary that she kept until she could no longer hold a pen.

Sawajiri Erika is in the role of Aya & Nishikido Ryo is Asou Haruto, the love interest.

This is a heartbreaking yet heartwarming story about an amazing young girl. Many have compared this series to Sekai no Chuushin De, another drama that will pull at your heartstrings.
